`CH_3CH_2OH` can be converted into `CH_3CHO` by

A

Catalytic hydrogenation

B

Treatment with `LiAlH_4`

C

Treatment with pyridinium chlorochromate

D

Treatment with `KMnO_4`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

Ethanal `(CH_3CHO` is an oxidised product of ethanol. Pyridinium chlorochromate `(C_5H_5overset+NHCloverset-CrO_3)`oxidises primary alcohols to aldehydes. Strong oxidising agents such as `KMnO_4` are used for getting carboxylic acid from alcohols.
The oxidation process can be stopped at the aldehyde stage if Cr(Vl) reagents such as Collin.s reagent `(CrO_3.2C_5H_5N)`, Corey.s reagent or pyridinium chlorochromate and pyridinium dichromate `[(C_5H_5NH_2)^(2+)Cr_2O_7^2-]` in anhydrous medium are used as the oxidising agent. So, the correct option is (c) `underset("Ethanol") (CH_3CJ_2OH)" " overset (PC C)("")to underset("Ethanol")(CH_3CHO)`.
