Two electrolytic cells containing molten solutions of nickel chloride and aluminium chloride are connected in series. If same amount of electric current is passed through them, what will be the weight of nickel obtained when 18 g of aluminium is obtained ?
( Al = `27 g mol^(-1)` , Ni = `58.5 g mol^(-1)` )

A

58.5 g

B

117 g

C

29.25 g

D

5.85 g

The correct Answer is:
A

Number of equivalent of nickel formed = Number of equivalent of aluminium formed
In `NiCl_(2)`, Nickel +2 oxidation state.
In , `AlCl_3`
Aluminium +3 oxidation state
Equivalent weight of Ni is `58.5/2 = 29.25`
Equivalent weight of Al is `27/3 = 9`
`(29.25 g xx 18 g)/(9g) = 58.5 g`
