Silver is removed electrolytically from ...

Silver is removed electrolytically from `200mL` of a `0.1N` solution of `AgNO_(3)` by a current of `0.1A`. How long will it take to remove half of the silver from the solution ?

A

16 sec

B

9650 sec

C

100 sec

D

10 sec

The correct Answer is:
B

Normality = N = `("No. of moles of equivalent")/("Volume in L")`
N = 0.1
`v = 200/1000 = 0.2 L`
No. of moles = Volume `xx` normality
`0.2 xx 0.1 = 0.02` moles
1 mole of Ag = 96500 C
`therefore 0.02` moles `=0.02 xx 96500 = 1930 C`
as Q = It
1930 = `0.1 xx t`
t = 19300 s
Now, time taken to remove half the silver from solution.
`= t/2 = 19300/2 = 9650` sec.
