Methyl magnesium bromide on reaction wit...

Methyl magnesium bromide on reaction with `SO_(2)` followed by hydrolysis gives :

A

Methyl sulfonic acid

B

Dithioacetic acid

C

Methane sulfinic acid

D

Ethane thiol

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

The Grignard.s reagent reacts with sulphur dioxide in a very similar way as carbon dioxide. The resulting intermediate on hydrolysis gives alkylsulfinic acid having the general formula RSOOH (like RCOOH). This reaction is successful on both aliphatic and aromatic Grignard.s reagent. An excess of alkyl halide when present before the introduction of sulphur dioxide, however, gives little amount of alkyl sulphone, `R_(2)SO_(4)`
