When food or moisture is in short supply, the plasmodium slime mould forms fruiting bodies called sporangia bearing spores. The spores are resistant to unfavourable environmental influences and under dry conditions. Meiosis occurs in the spores and under favourable condition the sporangia open and release the spores. The spores germinate to form flagellated haploid cells called swarm cells or non flagellated myxamoeba. Swarm cells fuse and ultimately form non flagellate zygote. The haploid resting spores and the swarm cells represent the haploid or gametophyte generation.
