Stomata on the surface of the leaf, open by

A

Decreasing the solute concentration in the guard cells

B

Increasing the solute concentration in the guard cells

C

Weakening of the cell walls of the guard cells to allow them to stretch

D

Increasing the water potential in the guard cells

The correct Answer is:
B

High pH favours the activity of enzyme phosphatase which converts starch into glucose 1– phosphate which then converted to glucose and phosphate and increases the conc. of cell sap. This causes further increase in the OP of guard cells and consequently into water potential decreases. This results in the movement of water into the guard cells from surrounding cells.
