In the light it consumes `CO_(2)` present in the intercellular spaces. This lowers the `H ^(+)` conc. of cell sap and pH of guard cells is increased. High pH favours the activity of enzyme phosphorylase which converts starch to glucose 1-phosphate and increase the conc. of cell sap. This causes an increase in the osmotic pressure of guard cells and water potential decrease and stomatal pore becomes open.
