The first clinical gene therapy was given in 1990 to a four year old girl Ashanti De Silva who was suffering from rare genetic disorder deaminase deficient severe combined immunodeficiency disease. It is caused by a defect in the gene for the enzyme adenosine deaminase. SCID patients have no functioning T – lymphocytes and one treated with the infections of their white blood cells that have been engineered to carry normal ADA alleles.
