African eye-worm Loa loa, transmitted by mangofly invade subcutaneous tissue and during their migration may pass across the eye-ball, hence the name eyeworm.
Loa microfilariae penetrate brain and spinal cord and perhaps carry neurotropic viruses. During their migration, they cause itense itching and swelling. They also cause swelling and pain in eyes, known as “calabar swellings”.
