A uniform chain of length 2 m is kept on a table such that a length of 60 cm hangs freely from the edge of the table. The total mass of the chain is 4 kg. What is the work done in pulling the entire chain on the table?

A

7.2 J

B

3.6J

C

120 J

D

1200 J

The correct Answer is:
B

Mass of hanged chain- `m.= (4)/(2) xx 0.6 = 1.2kg`
Centre of gravity `rarr` 0.3m
Work done W= mgh `=1.2 xx 10 xx 0.3= 3.6J`

Aliter : Fraction of length of the chain hanging from the table `= (1)/(n)= (60)/(200)= (3)/(10) rArr n= (10)/(3)`
Work done in pulling the chain on the table `W= (mgL)/(2n^(2))= (4 xx 10 xx 2)/(2 xx (10//3)^(2))= 3.6J`
