It is known that wax contracts on solidification. If molten wax is taken in a large vessel and it is allowed to cool slowly, then

A

It will start solidifying from the top to downward

B

It will start solidifying from the bottom to upward

C

It will start solidifying from the middle, upward and downward at equal rates

D

The whole mass will solidify simultaneously

The correct Answer is:
B

Substances are classified into two categories
(i) Water like substances which expand on solidification.
(ii) `CO_2` like (Wax, Ghee etc.) substances which contract on solidification. Their behaviour regarding solidification is opposite. Melting point of ice decreases with rise of pressure but that of wax etc increases with increase in pressure. Similarly ice starts forming from top to downwards whereas wax starts its formation from bottom to upwards.

A mixture of 0.5 mole of CO and 0.5 mole of CO_(2) is taken in a vessel and allowed to effuse out through a pinhole into another vessel which has vacuum If a total of A mole has effused out in time t show that M_(1)A +M_(2) (1-A) =36 where M_(1) and M_(2) are mean molar masses of the mixture that has effused out and the mixture still remaining in vessel respectively .

Lanthanoids and actinoids are f-block elements in which the last electron enters the anti-penultimate energy level. The most common oxidation state of lanthanoids is +3, though +2 and +4 oxidation states are exhibited by some of the elements. In lanthanoid series, there is a progressive decrease in atomic and ionic radii, known as lanthanoid contraction. Unlike lanthanoids, actinoids show a large number of oxidation states. Name two lanthanoids which exhibit +2 oxidation state.

A sphere of outer radius R having some cavity inside is allowed to roll down on an incline. The incline is then made smooth by waxing and the sphere is allowed to slide without rolling and now the speed attained is (5//4)v_0 . What is the radius of gyration of the sphere about an axis passing through its centre ?

A disc rotates horizontal at the rate of 100 rpm and M.I. of the disc about the axis of rotation is 1kg m^(2) . If a blob of molten wax weighing 50 gm drops gently at a distance 20 cm from the axis of rotation of the disc and remains stuck to it, then the increase in moment of inertia of the system will be
