Optical fibers are obtained by drawing glass into fibers thinner than even human hair but still possess very high mechanical strength. The advantage of optical fibers is that unlike ordinary glass like that of window panes which stops light in less than one meter, optical fibers transmit light over kilometers without any noticeable decrease in intensity. That is why they are being used in radio broadcast, television programmes and telecommunication including mobile and internet services. They are cheaper than copper coils and take much less space.
