Copper crystallizer into an fcc lattice ...

Copper crystallizer into an fcc lattice with edge length `3.61 xx 10^(8) cm`, Show that the calculated density in in agreement with its measured value of `8.92 g cm^(3)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`rho=(ZxxM)/(a^3xxV_0)`
For fcc lattice of copper , Z=4
Atomic mass of copper , `M=63.5 "g mol"^(-1)`
`therefore rho=(4xx63.5 "g mol"^(-1))/((3.61xx10^(-8) cm)^3xx(6.022xx10^23 "mol"^(-1)))=8.97 "g cm"^(-3)`
which is in close agreement with the measured value.
