Why common salt `(NaCl)` sometimes appear yellow?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Yellow colour of NaCl is due to metal excess defect as some `Cl^-` ions (anions ) leave their lattice sites and occupied by unpaired electrons. These sites are called F-centres . These electrons absorb energy from visible region for excitation so that complementary colour is yellow .
