What causes the temporary and permanent hardness of water ?

Presence of bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium , i.e., `(Ca(HCO_(3))_(2)` and `Mg(HCO_(3))_(2)` in water cause temporary hardness and presence of soluble chloride and sulphates of calcium and magnesium , i.e., `CaCl_(2), CaSO_(4), MgCl_(2) and MgSO_(4)` in water causes permanent hardness.
