Atomic hydrogen combaines with almost ...

Atomic hydrogen combaines with almost all elements but molecular hydrogen does not. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atomic hydrogen is highly unstable and hence it is very reactive. Therefore, it combines with almost all the elements. In contrast, the bond dissociation energy of H-H bond is very high (`435.88 KJ "mol"^(-1)`) . As a result , molecular hydrogen is almost insert at room temperature and hence reacts only with a few elements.
