The order of the base strength of the compounds

(iii) `NH_(2)^(-)`

A

`(iv) gt (ii) gt (i) gt (iii)`

B

`(iii) gt (ii) gt (iv) gt (i)`

C

`(ii) gt (iii) gt (iv) gt (i)`

D

`(ii) gt (iii) gt (i) gt (iv)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

The corresponding acids of (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) respectively are :
`CH_(3)COOH, CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(3), NH_(3)` and `C_(6)H_(5)OH`
Their acidic character decreases in the order :
`CH_(3)COOH gt C_(6)H_(5)OH gt NH_(3) gt CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(3)`
Now since a strong acid has a weak conjugate base, therefore, their basic character decreases in the opposite order :
`CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(2)^(-)` (ii) `gt NH_(2)^(-)` (iii) `gt C_(6)H_(5)O^(-)` (iv) `gt CH_(3)COO^(-)` (i) i.e., option (c) is correct.
