Consider the following molecules :

Compound (I) is aromatic while compound (II) is not. Why so ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Compound (I) has six delocalized `pi`-electrons (`4pi`-electrons of the two double bonds +two electrons of the lone pair present on the N atom). All the four carbon atoms and the nitrogen atom are `sp^2`-hybridized. The ring is planar. The molecule obeys Huckel rule and hence is aromatic.
Boron does not have lone pair of electrons. The molecule (II) has only four `pi`-electrons , does not obey Huckel rule and hence is not aromatic.
