Explain why hexacayano complexe of metal...

Explain why hexacayano complexe of metals in their +2 oxidation state are usually yellow , but the corresponding hexa aqua compounds are often blue or green .

Text Solution

In hexacyano complexes , cyanide is a strong ligand so causes greater crystal field splitting to a greater extant hence d-d transition requires smaller wavelength and the complimentary colour is yellow . While `H_(2)O` is a weak ligand in case of hexaaqua complex and causes smaller . Crystal field splitting hence d-d transition requires large wavelength and the complementary colour is blue or green .

Assertion: Zero and negative oxidation state of d-block metal ion are not possible in their complex compound. Reason: Low oxidation state of the metal ions are found when a complex compound has ligands capable of pi- aceptor character in addition to the sigma- bonding.

How will you account for the following ? (i) The metallic radii of the third (5d) series of transition metals are virtually the same as those of the corresponding group members of the second (4d) series. (ii) Lanthanoids form primarily +3 ions while actinoids usually have higher oxidation states in their compounds . Among the lanthanoids, Ln(III) compounds are predominant. However, occasionally in solution or in solid state +2 and +4 ions are obtained. Explain.
