Water flows through a horizontal pipe of...

Water flows through a horizontal pipe of varying area of cross-section at the rate 5 cubic metre per minute. What is the velocity of water at a point where pipe radius is 10 cm?

Text Solution

Given that
Volume flux per minute = `A_(1)V_(1) = 5 m^(3)//"min"`
`= (5)/(60)m^(3)//s`
Let the velocity where pipe radius is 10 cm, be v
Area of cross-section where pipe radius is 10 cm,
`A = pi xx (10)^(2)cm^(2)`
= 0.0314 `m^(2)`
Applying equation of continuity,
`A_(1)V_(1)=Av`
`rArr (5)/(60) = 0.0314 xx v`
`rArr v = (5)/(60 xx 0.0314)`
`v = 2.65 m s^(-1)`
