Can we related the thermal coefficient of linear expansion, `alpha`, to the thermal coefficient of volume expansion?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Assuming isotropic expansion, a first-order expression for the volume expansion is
`(DeltaV)/(V_(0))=(1+alphaDeltaT)^(3)` or `(DeltaV)/(V_(0))~~3alphaT` or `V~~V_(0)(1+3alphaDeltaT)`
Thus, the thermal coefficient of linear expansion, `alpha`, is related tot he thermal coefficient of volume expansion, `gamma` by `gamma~~3alpha`
