A magnetic needle possesses a dipole mom...

A magnetic needle possesses a dipole moment M . It is now bent at the middle to form L shape . What will be the effective dipole moment of the L shape ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Each half of the needle will possess a dipole moment `(vecM)/(2)` .

Now , the L shape is equivalent to two dipole arranged perpendicular to each other .
So , effective dipole moment is given by
`M' = sqrt(((M)/(2))^(2) + ((M)/(2))^(2)) = (M)/(sqrt2)` .
