A protozoan, Giardia is commonly nicknamed as the grand old man of the intestine. It is a diplomonadied parasitic flagellate occuring in man and other animals. Giardia intestinalis is a parasite of small intestine of man and it stays there for a long period. Thus, it is called grand old man of the intestine.
