One of the important human filaria is the African eyeworm loa, loa, It is transmitted by mangofly chiefly found in Africa. They commonly invade subcutaneous tissue and during their migration may pass across the eye ball, hence , the name eyeworm.
Microfilariae of Loa loa cause very injurious and fatal disease when they penetrate brain and spinal cord and perhaps carry neutropic viruses. During their migration, they cause intense itching and swelling . They cause swelling and pain in eyes, which are known as calabar swellings.
