It a cell with a solute potential of -0....

It a cell with a solute potential of `-0.2` Mpa and a pressure potential of 0.4 Mpa is placed in a chamber filled with pure water that is pressurised with 0.5 Mpa what is likely to happen

A

water will flow out of the cell

B

water will flow into the cell

C

cell wall will be crushed

D

the cell will explode

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Here, the water potential of cell is `-0.2+0.4=-0.2`. On the other hand water potential of external solution is 0, but when it is pressurised with 0.5 Mpa its water potential increases. Since, water flow from higher water potential to low water potential, water will flow into the cell.
