During opening of stomata uptake of `K^(+)` takes place. The uptake of `K^(+)` is balanced by `Cl^(-)` uptake. The malic and dissociate into hydrogen and malate ion. The synthesis of malic acid in guard cells accompanies the influx of potassium ions.
