To generate pressure gradients to facilitate expiration and inspiration the human body uses the intercostal muscles and

A

alveolar air

B

bronchi

C

primart, secondary and tertiary bronchioles

D

diaphragm

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

During inspiration, the diaphragm and specicalised set of inercostal muscles ( external and internal) contract. This moves the lateral thoracic wall out ward and upward incresing capacity of thoracic cavity and generate the pressure gradient between the lungs and atmosphere. Expiration is a passive process.

Assertion : The abdominal muscles are primarily involved in generating pressure gradient between the lungs and the atmosphere. Reason : The strength of inspiration and expiration can be increased by additional muscles in diaphragm and intercostal muscles.

(b) Normal breathing is also called as abdominal breathing. (c ) Expiration during sneezing, coughing, yoga is normal expiratio during which IICM and abdominal muscles relax. (d) Inspiration can occur if the pressure within lungs (intra pulmonary pressure) is more than the atmospheric pressure.
