Polyploidy can be induced by the application of colchicine. It is a posisonous chemical, isolated from seeds and bulbs of autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale). It blocks spindle formatin and thus, inhibits the movement of sister chromatids to the opposite poles. the resulting nucleus includes all the chromitids. As a result, the chromosome number of the cell is doubled, which leads topolyploidy.
