DNA fingerprinting or DNA typing is a technique to identify a person on the basis of person's DNA specificity. The technique is based upon the fact that the DNA constitution of an individual carries some specific sequences of nucleotides, which do not carry any information for protein synthesis.
These specific sequences are repeated many times and found at many places within the genome. These loci are known as the Variable NUmber Tandem Repeats (VNTR) or minisatellites, which are very specific in nature and with variability in their number from person to person.
