`CO_(2)` is confined exclusively to the troposphere. The thick layer of `CO_(2)` in the troposphere behaves like the glass panels of a greenhouse and allow the sunlight to filtre through, but prevents the heat from being re-radiated in the outer space. This is called greenhouse effect. `CO_(2)` and water vapours absorb most of the heat present in the atmosphere and add it to the heat, which is already present on earth. Thus, the net result is the warming up of the earth's atmosphere.
