In lactose operon of E. coli, the lac I gene product is the repressor which blocks the operator gene so that the structural genes are unable to form mRNAs. Thus, regulation of lac operon by repressor is referred to as negative regulation. Due to the repressor the lac operoon remains in inactive state and is thus inducible.
