Find the equation of the parabola which ...

Find the equation of the parabola which is symmetric about the x-axis and passes through the point `(-2,-3)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It is given that the parabola is symmetric about the x-axis
`therefore` The required equation is of the form `y^(2) = 4ax` or `y^(2) =-4ax`.
Now, the sign depends on whether the parabola opens rightwards of leftwards.
The parabola passes through `(-2. -3)` which lies in the third quadrant, therefore it must open leftwards.
Thus, the equation is of the form `y^(2) =-4ax`.
