Suggest a suitable oxidising agent for t...

Suggest a suitable oxidising agent for the given conversion.
`(CH_(3))_(2)C = CH-COCH_(3) to (CH_(3))_(2) C= CHCOOH`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Alkaline `KMnO_(4)` or `HNO_(3)` or `K_(2)Cr_(2)O_(7) // H^(+)` cannot be used for this purpose, because they all will result into oxidative cleavage at the double bond, Hence oxidation by NaOH + `I_(2)` (or NaOl) is the most suitable method for this conversion.
