Why does type of overlap given in the following figure not result in bond formation ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

the area of ++ overlap is equal to the area of + - overlap. Thus, the two areas are equal but
oppostite in sign. Hence , they cancel out and net overlap is zero and therefore is no bond formation.
In the second fig ., no overlap takes place between `P_(x) and p_(y)` orbitals. Hence, no bond is formed.
