What does the negative sign in the expression `E_(Zn^(2+)//Zn)^(@)=-0.76V` mean?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Negative sign for `E_(Zn^(2+)//Zn)^(@)` shows that zinc is more reactive than hydrogen. This means that when zinc electrode is connected to SHE, Znw will be oxidized to `Zn^(2+)` and `H^(+)` will be reduced to `H_(2)`.
