Consider the following statement in respect of Lantinanoids :
(i) The basic strength of hydroxides of lanthanoids increases from `La (OH)_(3)` to `Lu (OH)_(3)`.
(ii) The lanthanoid ions `Lu^(3+), Yb^(2+)` and `Ce^(4+)` are diamagnetic.
Which of the statements (s) given above is /are correct ?

A

1 only

B

2 only

C

both 1and 2

D

Neither 1 and 2

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Basic strength decreases from `La(Oh)_(3)` to `Lu(OH)_(3)`. Hence, (l) is incorrect .The given ions contain no unpaired electrons and therefore, are diamagnetic. Hence, (2) is correct.

Consider the following statements in respect of lanthanoids. 1. The basic strength of hydroxides of langthanoids increases from La(OH)_(3)" to "Lu(OH)_(3) The lanthanoid ions Lu^(3+)," "Yb^(2+)" and "Ce^(4+) are diamagnetic. Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

A: La(OH)_(3) , is less basic than Lu(OH)_(3) , R: Basic character of hydroxides of lanthanoids increase on moving from La^(+3) to Lu^(+3)

Assertion : La(OH)_3 is more basic than Lu(OH)_3 . Reason : Basic character of hydroxides of lanthanoids decrease on moving from La^(3+) to Lu^(3+)
