Why do drugs cause side effects ?

Side effects are caused when a drug binds to more than one type of receptor. For example, some anti`-`depressant drugs bind to serotonin receptor. Side effects can arise if the drug interacts with histamine or acetylcholine receptors or if the degradation product of the drug is also biologically active.
