If the air column in a pipe which is closed at one end, is in resonance with a vibrating turning fork at a frequency 60 Hz, then the length of the air column is (velocity of sound is 330m/s)

A

35.7 cm

B

31.7 cm

C

12.5 cm

D

62.5 cm

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Frequency of the tuning fork,
`v=260Hz`
The fundamental freqeuncy off a closed organ pipe, `v=(v)/(4l)`
where, v is the velocity of sound in air.
therefore, length of air column (l)
`=(v)/(4(v))=(330)/(4xx260)`
`=0.317m=31.7cm`
