Which of the following bonds has the highest energy?

A

`Se-Se`

B

`Te-Te`

C

`S-S`

D

`O-O`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

The bond strength in S_S is greater and it decreases down the group. S-S bond energy is also greater than O-O bond, because in smaller oxygen atom lone pairs repel the bond pairs of O-O bond to much extent resulting in weakening off O-O bond more than in S-S bond. due to this, S has more catenation power than oxygen. the tendency of catenation is in the order.
`O lt S gt Se gt Te gt Po`
