The basic character of hydroxides decreases from La `("OH")_(3)` to Lu `("OH")_(3)`. Due to smaller size of Lu, the Lu-OH bond attains more covalent character. On the other hand, `"Zr"^(4+)" and ""Hf"^(4+)` possess similar ionic radii due to lanthanoid contraction. Also, `"Ce"^(4+)` acts as an oxidising agent.
