State the first law of thermodynamics....

State the first law of thermodynamics.

Text Solution

First law of thermodynamics : If heat is supplied to a system capable of doing external work, the increase in its internal energy equals the heat supplied to the system minus the external work done by the system.
It dQ is the heat supplied to a system and dW is the external work done by the system, the increase in the internal energy of the system is
`dE=dQ-dW " " :. dQ=dE+dW`
which is the differential form of the first law of thermodynamics where all quantities are expressed in the same units.

State the zeroth law of thermodynamics.

Assertion: The zeroth law of thermodynamics was know before the first law of thermodynamics. Reason: The zeroth law concerning thermal equilibrium appeared after three laws (I, II and III) of thermodynamics and thus was named zeroth law.
