What are eddy currents ? Give some applications of eddy currents. How can the eddy currents be minimised ?

Whenever a conductor or a part of it is moved in a magnetic field cuttind magnetic field lines or placed in a changing magnetic field, the free electrons in the bulk of the metal start circulating in closed paths equivalent to current-carring loops. These loops currents resemble edddies in a fluid stream and are hence called eddy or Foucault ccurrents after jean Bernard Leon Fouault who first detected them.
Eddy currennts result in generation of heat amounting to energy loss inn the cores of transformers, motors, inductioon coil, etc.
To minimize the eddy currents,, instead of a soild metal block, cores are made of thin insulated metal strips or laminae.
