Applications of eddy currents:
(1) Dead-beat galvanometer: Apivoted moving-coil galvanometer used for measuring cuurrent has the coil wound on a light aluminium frame. The rotation of the metal frame in magantic field gives rise too eddy current in the frame which opposes the rotation and the coil is brough tto rest quicky. This makes the galvanometer dead-beat.
(2) Induction furnace : Strong eddy currents can produce intense heat, sufficient to melt metals.. This is made use of an induction furance to amke allys of different metalls in vacuum or too purify singlee-crystal bars of a semiconductor.
(3) Electric brakes : When a conducting ssheet is pushed into magnetic fieldd, or pulled out, very quickly, the interaction between the eddy currents in the moving conductoor and the field is such as to retard the motion. This property of eddy currents is used as a method of braking in two-wheelers and cars.
