What are the drawbacks or limitations of amplitude modulation ?

Drawbacks/ Limitations of amplitude modulation :
(1) Low efficiency : As the baseband signal in an amplitude modulated wave lies in its side bands, useful tranmitted power is in the side bands. But this is a small fraction of the total power of an AM wave. Hence, the efficiency of this type of modulation is low .
(2) Small transmission range : Due to low efficiency , AM cannot be transmitted over a long range.
(3) Noisy reception : An amplitude modulated wave is easily affected by noise. A receiver cannot distinguish between the amplitude variations representing a noise and those of a modulated carier.
(4) Poor audio quality : Music signals from musical instruments require a bandwidth of about 15 kHz to 20 kHz. Audio signal bandwidth in AM is limited to less than 10 kHz. For double - sideband AM signal, this means the highest modulating signal in a sideband can be 5 kHz, so that the full range of music frequencies cannot be transmitted.
