Solid ice is lighter than water. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(1) Ice has hexagonal three dimensional crystall structure formed due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding which leave almost half the space vacant.
(2) The structure of liquid water and solid ice are almost identical .
(3) On melting of ice, vacant space is more than in liquid water.
Therefore the density of ice is less than water.

Which of the alkali metals is lighter than water?

A cube of ice of edge 4 cm is placed in an empty cylindrical glass of inner diameter 6 cm. Assume that the ice melts uniformly from each side so that it always retains its cubical shape. Remembering that ice is lighter than water, find the length (in cm) of the edge of the ice at the instant it just leaves the contact with the bottom of the glass.
