What are the limitations of crystal field theory?

Text Solution

The limitations of crystal field theory are as follows :
(1) This theory is applicable to metal ions with d-orbitals and does not explain about s- and p-orbitals.
(2) It does not explain z bonding in the coordination compounds.
(3) This theory considers electrostatic attraction between central metal ion and ligands, hence considers only ionic bonds between them but does not account for covalent nature between them or coordínate bonds.
(4) Water `(H_(2)O)` is a stronger ligand than `OH^(-)` which cannot be explained by this theory satisfactorily.
