What is metamerism? Explain metamerism with suitable examples of ethers.

Text Solution

Ethers having the same molecular formula but different alkyl groups attached on either side of the oxygen atom are called metamers of each other. This phenomenon is called metamerism.
Metamers of 2-methoxy propane `( CH_(3) -O- overset(CH_(3))overset(|)(CH) - CH_(3))` are as follows:
(1) `CH_(3) - O- CH_(2) -CH_(2)- CH_(3)` 1 - methoxy propane .
`CH_(3)- CH_(2) - O- CH_(2) - CH_(3)` Ethoxy ethane.
