Thalassemia patients need regular blood transfusion.

(1) Thalassemia is caused due to defective gene located on chromosome 16 or chromosome 11, due to which there is abnormality of polypeptide globin chain synthesis.
(2) These patients have deficiency of `alpha` and `beta` globin.
(3) They cannot synthesise normal haemoglobin. Their RBCs also show variations in size and shape.
(4) Hence, they suffer from anaemia. For their survival, therefore they need regular blood transfusions.
