Unique features of acquired immunity :
(1) Speciflcity : Specificity is the ability to differentiate various foreign molecules that invade the body. Acquired immunity is therefore specific for each type of pathogen.
(2) Diversity : Diversity is the ability to recognize a vast variety of diverse pathogens or foreign molecules.
(3) Discrimination between self and nonself : Due to this feature of acquired immunity, the body is able to differentiate between own cells, i.e. self and foreign cells or molecules, i.e. nonself.
(4) Memory : When a specific pathogen is acted upon for the first time, there is immune response generated to eliminate this pathogen. The immune system retains the memory of this encounter. As a result, when same pathogen once again enters the body there is a quicker and heightened immune response.
