A simple mocroscope consists of a convex lens of short focal length, usually fixed in a suitable frame with a handle or mounted on a stand.

The object is placed in front of the convex lens of short focal length such that the object distance is less than the focal length. The image is virtual and larger than the object. It is formeed on the same side of the lens as the object.
A maximum magnification of about 20 cn be obtained by a simple mocroscope.
A simple microscope is used by watch repaires to observe small parts of a watch and by jewellers to examine ornaments. A simple microscope (also called a magnifying glass) is also used to read words is small print.
